The story begins in 1958, when Raleigh Jobes married Betty Jo Pelter. Although Raleigh had a rich background of ranching, he truly became interested in cattle, specifically Angus, through assisting Betty Jo's family on their ranch, Angus Havens Farm located in Cherokee, Oklahoma. He significantly enjoyed working with their Angus cattle herd and quickly set off on the journey of building a herd of their own. They acquired their first group of cattle when Raleigh was an agricultural advisor for Davenport Public Schools. From there, Cliff Springs Ranch was established.
In 1978, Raleigh and Betty Jo moved outside of Stillwater, OK to commence work on their newly established ranch. At this time Raleigh obtained a position at Oklahoma State University as an agricultural economics professor for extension farm management. They then became determined to raise and maintain a high quality, unique, and docile Angus herd through closely observing bloodlines and EPDs.
To achieve their goal, they look specifically at the birth weight EPDs, aiming for numbers under 2.0, as well as weaning weight and yearling weight. Their overall objective is for birth weights to be around fifty pounds, while weaning weights near six hundred and fifty pounds at two hundred and five days. With this attained, calves literally "hit the ground running." Other numbers taken into consideration include milk EPDs, rib eye EPDs, and dollar beef EPDs. Disposition is another large part contemplated when choosing a new member
for the herd. With those strict guidelines in place, Raleigh and Betty Jo have molded their herd into a high quality, docile, and unique registered Angus cattle.
